Acoustic Energy was founded on April 4, 1987 by Phil Jones in London, England. Original ly known as "Eldonfield Limited", the name was changed on June 25, 1987 and Acoustic Energy was officially born.

The first product that left the factory was the legendary compact speaker AE 1. The AE 1 set a new standard in the class of compact speakers and has been the basis for the company's product ethos ever since.

In order to meet the increasing production requirements, Acoustic Energy moved in 1994 to a new building, 100 miles west of London, in the historic Cotswold town of Cirencester. In 2021, they moved to Tetbury just a few kilometers further to move into premises that meet the latest requirements.

Around the same time, AE received investments from the Malaysian OEM speaker manufacturer Formosa Prosonic Industries (FPI). FPI bought a majority stake in Acoustic Energy . This financial support and production partnership enabled AE to expand into the entry–level speaker category, and later to expand the portfolio to include electronics products such as Bluetooth (TM) speakers and WiFi Internet radio.

At the beginning of 2017 Acoustic Energy became a British company again. Over the past 30 years, AE has received hundreds of awards and accolades from the hifi press all over the world and is still one of the world's most respected loudspeaker manufacturers.
