ACCUPHASE C-222
This absolute high-end preamplifier belonged to the reference class! During the development of the C-222, Accuphase has focused on a very high phono quality.
The C-222 is designed with a direct coupling in terms of circuitry, which allows it to have an exceptionally precise sound image. This means that there are no capacitors in the signal path in the entire circuit from the input to the output! The device is designed as a cascode amplifier in a continuous countercurrent design. This circuit technology is particularly well suited for a very clean voltage amplification!
The C-222 was reference class in all tests. The former factory price was 5200,- DM.
The power supply alone already has a huge amount in it. When you look at the power supply, you get the impression that this is more of a power amplifier than a preamplifier. From here, all amplifier stages are separately supplied with regulated current, which gives the overall concept incredible stability.
The sound of this device is very finely resolving. What else is "exposed" in terms of music signals is already very amazing. Suddenly you hear things that you have never noticed before. That speaks volumes. The phono stages MM + MC are exemplary in sound and fidelity! The beautifully brushed and champagne-colored aluminum front panel and the polished side panel give the C-222 a very noble appearance, just as it should be for a HighEnder of this class.
Behind the hinged lower front panel, which, by the way, has also been fixed very solidly, all the operating elements that are not needed so often are accommodated. These include a headphone jack, switches for switchable outputs for both line out and rec Out, tapemonitor A and B, stereo / mono and subsonic switches, impedance rotary selector for MC, gain selector for phono, compensation selector (loudness) in two stages and the balance controller.
In the display field you will be informed about the respective operating state or which mode you have just selected. These include the display of the operating state Rec, tape, stereo/mono, subsonic, MM/MC, and Compensation (loudness).
The knob on the volume control is perfectly mounted, i.e. there is no backlash or a "shaky" assembly! The button fits really well, as you can expect from a device of this class. But this kind of processing is also typical for Accuphase !.
The inputs! For the phono connection there is a small "treat" here. When operating with an MM pickup, the input capacitance can still be adjusted to the respective connected system via a rotary switch on the rear wall. A very practical thing, I think. Two output jacks are provided on the output side. Two power amplifiers, e.g. for bi-amping, could then also be connected to this.
This is a high-end device of the absolute reference class! Qualitatively, the preamplifier is much higher quality than most Accuphase integrated amplifiers, and they are already proverbially very good.
