Tech nics sets a new benchmark for turntable technologies of the future

Audio legends of tomorrow: The direct-drive turntable

Tech nics SP-10R and the SL-1000R turntable system

Hamburg, January 8, 2018: The Tech nics audio brand is expanding its line-up to high -end audio components for two new models of the reference class: the direct-drive turntable SP-10R and the corresponding complete turntable system SL-1000R.

With the introduction of the two models, Tech nics is seamlessly building on the unprecedented brand history in the pursuit of the highest analog sound experiences. So the series about the legendary turntable SP-10 continues to inspire audiophiles all over the world to this day.

Tech nics turntables: The legend is alive.

In 1970, Tech nics presented the SP-10, the world's first direct-drive turntable, which, thanks to its excellent playback quality and reliability, soon made the SP-10 series both the first choice for broadcasters and the object of desire for audiophiles all over the world. The great fascination of the direct drive has always been its ability to eliminate sound impairments, as they typically occur in other types of turntables due to synchronism fluctuations and microvibrations between the drive motor and the transmission mechanisms.

As an innovator and creator of emotional music components, Tech nics secured a firm place in the heart of the music world and shaped music history like no other audio brand – from the roots of hip-hop to the rapid rise of international star DJs to the living rooms of millions of music lovers who could listen to their favorite pieces at home exactly as they were created by artists and producers.

The SP-10R and the SL-1000R continue this legacy by impressively combining the decades of experience of Japanese sound engineers with the latest technological achievements. Tech nics is thus setting a new milestone for modern turntable technologies and underscoring its own claim to product development and design for the highest analog vinyl performance.

New standards with extremely low-noise sound reproduction: The heart of the Tech nics SP-10R is a direct drive motor with an iron-coreless double coil stator and twin rotor. The motor is equipped with nine coils on each side of the coil carrier and has a twelve-pole control. As a result, it achieves synchronization with a deviation of less than 0.015 percent – and is thus in a range in which the deviation can no longer be detected with the usual measurement methods.

Tungsten weights with an extremely high specific gravity are used in the turntable of the SP-10R. These are embedded in the outer edge of a 10mm thick brass support plate, which in turn is connected to the main plate made of die-cast aluminum. This results in the total weight of the turntable of 7.9kg with a mass inertia of approximately one ton x cm2. In addition, a vibration-damping layer of rubber is applied to the underside of the aluminum plate. This results in a three-layer overall construction that combines high rigidity with excellent vibration damping properties.

To avoid unwanted noise and vibrations, the control unit of the SP-10R is also separated from the main chassis. A highly developed switching power supply is used, which achieves the best control characteristics for a high torque. A specific technological solution is integrated in it, which suppresses noise effects on the pickup system and thus ensures an extremely low-noise power supply. The SP-10R also uses an extremely noise-resistant system for communication between the main and control units.

Thanks to these careful noise avoidance measures, the SP-10R achieves a noise voltage distance that, in terms of analog turntables, is unparalleled anywhere in the world.

Tonearm and tonearm base ensure outstanding scanning properties: For scanning all information in the record groove, the new Tech nics reference record players are equipped with a statically balanced S-shaped universal tonearm with a lightweight but highly damping arm tube made of magnesium. The cardanic bearing design uses bearings with ultimate precision. Only Japanese specialists with many years of experience are able to carry out the complicated assembly and fine adjustment. They achieve an extremely low breakaway torque of the tonearm and thus ensure a high-precision scanning behavior. Stranded wires made of oxygen-free copper (OFC) are used for the tonearm internal wiring. In this way, the music signal sampled by the pickup is not affected in any way, the music recording retains its full vividness.

The tonearm base is firmly coupled to the turntable chassis, whereby the characteristics for the scanning conditions between the tonearm-carrying construction and the turntable bearings remain constant at all times. The scanning process is thus protected in the best possible way, so that the strengths of the tonearm are optimally displayed. Additional tonearm bases can be purchased optionally. In addition, short or long tonearm versions from other manufacturers can also be connected to the tonearm base. Including the built-in tonearm, up to three tonearms are possible.

Expansion of the outstanding portfolio of direct drive turntable players: Meanwhile, the new SP-10R and SL-1000R models were conceived and designed not only as a replacement, but also as an extension of Tech nics' outstanding turntable systems. This allows users of older Tech nics SP-10MK2 and SP-10MK3 models to replace their old drives, including the control unit, with the new SP-10R, while retaining the frame and tonearm completely. The external dimensions and the screw positions of the SP-10R were deliberately designed to match those of the SP-10MK2 and SP-10MK3 models. The SP-10R is thus backwards compatible. The same also applies to the control unit of the SP-10R, the shape and dimensions of which correspond to the control unit of the SP-10MK2.
