Now (due to documents that can no longer be obtained)legendary CD player from the British hi-fi manufacturer, which is distinguished not only by its minimalism driven to the extreme, but especially by its tube output amplifier with two single-ended triodes in class A circuit; according to reports, Musica l Fidelity is said to have been the first company to launch a CD player with a tube amplifier on the market.
The laser unit and the entire digital part are from Sanyo , while the amplifier unit - a design by Tim de Paravicini, who had also designed the A1 - was developed by Musica l Fidelity and manufactured in Asia. The case (designed by the design office Pentagram) comes from the same series as the one of the A1 (but with a two-part cover plate) and was manufactured in Germany.
The device is designed as a top loader with a manually operated flap, the equipment was reduced to the most necessary: there was no remote control, only play/pause, stop, skip forward/backward and a memory button (for saving a separate sequence of tracks) along with a simple display of the running track number are available as controls.
The version of the player intended for the German market was called 'Pan', while the device was sold as 'CDT' in the rest of the world. The first version (with a completely black case) had a plastic flap with an integrated puck, while a second series (glass flap, separate puck) was supplied both in black and with a chrome front matching the 'David' and the later 'Final Edition'; the technology of the later model does not differ from that of the first series.
As with all musical fidelity devices of this series with Class A technology, it is worthwhile to warm up the player thoroughly (i.e. about 30 minutes to 1 hour ).
The power supply is quite sensitive to reverse polarity, in case of doubt, try it out by turning the plug.
Tech nically and mechanically, the player is reasonably robust, so you do not damage the somewhat unstable plastic parts; laser unit (even with complete carriage mechanics) are still occasionally available, tubes at any time.
There is a transformer with unknown electrical data between the DAC and the output stage, which can no longer be obtained. If a used player has the specific defect that one or both channels only start after a longer warm-up time or when there is pressure on the transmitter, it is probably advisable to refrain from buying.
