History: ©Ecouton-Audiolab or, Lemgo "Company history ECOUTON-Audiolab or:

The company ECOUTON-Audiolab or HiFi-Komponenten GmbH was founded in 1979 by Werner Lotterbach and Dieter Fricke as a loudspeaker distributor, after the cooperation with audiolabor, Brinkmann and Knorrn had been terminated. The product range was a series of loudspeakers – 4 models – from Denmark, the distinctive feature of which was a solid wood cabinet made of pine, corners connected with grooves and prongs with the name "MRL". Not very successful. The active Werner Lotterbach retired already in the first year due to illness and Manfred Görgen passively took over his share. The "natural wood housing" was changed to a foil housing and thus successfully (!!!). The MRL 120 made an outstanding test win in Stereoplay and the MRL 90 was a winner that outclassed its competitors according to AUDIO. A new crossover had been developed for these speakers, which realized a completely unfamiliar sound quality. A joint development with Ulrich Rahe resulted in the RABox and in 1981 the LQL 150 with us. The first test showed the best measurement results, but it was not judged well in terms of sound, too little bass, too little treble. The LQL 150 has been subjected to the Japanese Kaizen and is constantly being further developed. Better woofers, new tweeters, especially the new crossover, we called it the "Realistic Phase Crossover". And the type transmissionline is developing into the wavelength attenuation labyrinth, the lambda-Q labyrinth, LQL. This "earned" the box a special position in the field of sound realism or for outstanding naturalness, which was rewarded with a test victory in the HiFi Vision in 1990. In 1987, the LQL 200 came out, with its own self-developed midrange tweeter, with a very low self-resonance, a very good polar diagram and an outstanding dynamic response. The bass was also very unusual, pneumatically coupled was an external driver with an internal driver for an unusually precise and "black" bass reproduction on a Lambda-Q labyrinth with the data Eigenresonance 30 Hz, attenuation quality 0.5 and housing high-pass 2nd order. The box had a large number of very good test reports in all special interest magazines and the reputation of realizing an outstanding instrument placement in a realistic completely detached sound field. The bass reproduction and the dynamic fine resolution are also exceptional with the box. There are some serious music lovers who consider the LQL 200 to be the most musical box to buy to date. As the last optimization in the series, the LQL 200 was equipped with a time-shifting all-pass, which was supposed to compensate for the time offset between the woofer/midrange and the midrange tweeter type MHT 50/25 caused by each crossover. Thus, we were probably one of the very few on the market who made such an optimization. There were practically no "affordable" amplifiers on the market that could exploit the dynamic potential of the LQL speakers, especially the LQL 200. Therefore, an intensive search was made for a cooperation opportunity with an amplifier specialist, unfortunately not successful. We have therefore developed our own amplifiers, which were offered under the brand "QUINTESS ENCE", which represented a league of their own in sound and performance and were often superior to competitive objects of double price. Unfortunately, an incredible misfortune happened: in all amplifiers and in our stock, the power supply capacitors opened their safety valve and as a result, over 100 devices, some of which were already with customers, were irreparably destroyed. This resulted in a total damage of about DM 500,000, which brought us to the edge of existence. Our loudspeaker cable "transientone QUADR AX kombi", which also enabled an exceptional performance, was not accepted by the trade because of too complex handling and also charged us DM 30,000. However, 1991 was a very successful financial year and since Chancellor Kohl promised us blooming landscapes after reunification, we were in good hope of being able to make up for our losses. From July 1, 1992, the solidarity surcharge was then levied and after a successful first half of the year, our sales fell completely in the second, with a further loss of about DM 30,000 at the end of the year. The attempts to get new investment funds in 1993 were also unsuccessful due to the general uncertainty and after a negative information to our house bank, they blocked our business account, as a result of which we were unable to act. Since the legal and business form of a GmbH is subject to legal regulations, unfortunately, the insolvency had to be declared after 20 days in May 1993."
