As with the other RC models (except RC-A), the RC-K achieves its full sound and frequency range only in conjunction with the (indispensable) control unit, which is switched between preamp and power amplifier and linearizes the frequency response, compensates for errors in the frequency response and Increases the bass range so that the speaker also reaches the specified lower cut-off frequency (from about 40 Hz at -3 dB according to Stereoplay 09/2000). Without the control unit, the RC-K does not reach the desired depth in the bass and the rest of the sound spectrum is also far from being achieved without it.
The control unit of the RC-K is the article RC 4 (Article no. 5196). The RC-L uses the RC-1 Control Unit (Item No. 4040). The units are not compatible with each other, because each unit is exactly tuned to its version (the only exception: SC-L and successor RC-L: both have similar chassis, case size and crossover tuning. It is always advisable to use the appropriate unit, but the tonal differences are only marginal, if audible at all). The units are also offered for other loudspeakers on the Internet on eBay and Co. However, Canton explicitly does NOT recommend this , which is absolutely understandable. I have applied the unit of my RC-L to the small Q Acoustics - Concept 20 for a test. The sound was deeper, but musty, and the amplifier got off after 1 minute!
Here is an assignment of the controllable control units to the corresponding Canton models:
