Sound: With Control Unit, the SC-L sound "full-bodied", very clear, round, silky soft, with a very wide stage (less in depth) and incredibly deep up to 25 Hz with load-stable amplifiers... does not require a subwoofer. In contrast to the successor RC-L, the SC-L plays softer, rounder, less analytical... more agreeable. However, the SC-L has only one fabric covering, but it is a little more compact and with about 26 kg lighter. For this purpose, the RC-L is equipped with the controllable Unit 4040 from the outset.

Here is an assignment of the controllable control units to the corresponding Canton models:

  • Control unit with power supply 'Canton Control Unit' (black box) for Equalization of bass and treble. Is looped in between the preamplifier and the power amplifier, by means of a tape monitor on an (older) amplifier / receiver or simply between the source (e.g. CD player) and the amplifier / receiver. With the extremely rare special model 0227, bass and treble can be adjusted in 5 steps (-2,-1,0,+1,+2) identical to the Unit 4040 of the successor Ergo RC-L. In operation without a control unit, the crossover would theoretically have to be adapted to compensate for the built-in frequency response influences in the bass and treble and to obtain a linear frequency response.
  • The control unit of the SC-L is available in 3 versions (Unit 1, successor Unit 2 and adjustable special model Unit SC-L/RC) and is precisely matched to the loudspeaker. However, the unit is not intended for the SC-S. This has its own control unit, which is precisely tailored to this. It is simply a shame that you can use the control units with each other or, worse, operate them advantageously with other loudspeakers. When operating with external speakers, even the amplifier can be overwhelmed very quickly (clipping, distortions).
  • The SC-L is very low-impedance in the bass range, which means that you need very load-stable and powerful amplifiers that have the necessary damping factor to unlock the SC-L's full potential (identical to the successor RC-L).
  • As with all SC/RC models (exception: RC-A), the SC-L achieves its full sound and frequency range only in conjunction with the associated control unit (black box), which compensates for errors in the frequency response (linearization) and expands the bass range so that the speaker also reaches the lowest cut-off frequency of -25 dB at -3 dB. Without a control unit, the entire sound spectrum of the SC-L is far from being achieved. Unfortunately, there have been no separable receivers / amplifiers (pre-out and main-in) since about 2005, and analog looping using a tape monitor has also not been possible since then. Nowadays, the unit can only be looped in between the pre / power amplifier or a receiver / amplifier can be separated. This is the only way to play digital sources perfectly (of course, you can always connect the unit analogously between the source and the amplifier / receiver, i.e. an RCA cable from the source to the unit and from the unit to the amplifier / receiver). Unfortunately, the use of these speakers is very limited nowadays. Without a control unit, however, I would clearly prefer their pure Ergo counterpart.
  • Unfortunately, the use of the control unit is associated with tonal losses in the mid and high range. Although it influences the bass in the aforementioned positive way, it is more than just a piece of wire. The SC-L therefore only develops its true potential in bi-amping operation with 4 power amplifiers, whereby the control unit is looped in between the preamplifiers and the power amplifiers for the bass and the power amplifiers for midrange / treble are connected directly to the preamplifier. The result is a much more liberated sound with a much more controlled bass and much more resolution and detail above it. She is playing in a different league than the already very positive test results suggest.
