- Excerpt from brochure: Sony TC-164 SD
- The TC-164 SD was the best portable device from Sony
- The size roughly corresponded to that of a UHER Report tape recorder of the 4000 series about 40 cm wide
- It was ideally suited for both outdoor and Hi-fi applications
- It is similar to the little brother TC 158 SD, except for the other instruments
- Peak instead of VU meter, better sound heads and the pitch control
- The recording quality was almost on par with a sound pad
- Most of the home cassette decks from the time sounded worse
- The features:
- Mains, battery operation (4 x mono cells) and external 6 volt connection
- Microphone (jack)and line inputs and outputs (RCA & DIN!), if necessary possible with limiter
- Quartz-controlled direct drive, even swallows extreme shocks, shaking movements or cobblestones
- Speed control +/- 5% only possible during playback
- 2 round peak meters (can be illuminated)
- Dolby B
- Band types iron oxide, chrome and ferrochrome with 3-fold bias switch
- Control speaker (mono, moderate sound), stereo via headphones (excellent sound)
- 2 sound heads, including an S&F head
- No backband control possible
