The new compression ATRAC 3 had nothing to do with the previous ATRAC designations. This compression made it possible to achieve twice the recording time (LP2) or twice the recording time (LP4) on conventional MD. The devices of the whole series were backward compatible and could also record and play in classic ATRAC system. On the other hand, older MD decks could not play an ATRAC 3.
