The automatic shutdown of the power amplifier works reliably. I have connected relatively weak 30W speakers for testing. As soon as an overload threatened, the relay responded and nothing broke. By the way, in this way you can save teenagers (for their own protection) from a tinitus: too loud? -> Clack! A few seconds of waiting. Still too loud? -> clack! Since the teenager can quickly lose the fun of dad's old stereo system ;-)
Note: How should an amplifier know how weak or strong a connected box is? Please explain! The only thing that could be: if too much current is drawn, i.e. the impedance is too low, a protection circuit can respond. Otherwise, 30W speakers would simply be "spent". Furthermore: The power specifications of the power amplifier mentioned above cannot be correct: maximum power consumption (according to the nameplate) 330 watts, but should 2x 220 watts arrive at the speakers at 2643961b8da111c0a15d770a1109a86d4? It is doubtful whether the amplifier is stable at all 2 ohms with only two power transistors.
With daily use and frequent switching of the rotary selector switches (for the audio sources and speaker pairs), these rotary switches failed and had to be replaced after about 10 years. If you do not want this effort / expense, however, there is the possibility to use the device as a pure power amplifier (e.g. behind a mixing console), by the specialist bypassing all connections and tone controls and making only the "main input" directly usable.
Note: The grub screws of the control buttons are usually loosened on the rotary selector switches. Even here, Onkyo has taken note: nothing needs to be unscrewed or opened and certainly no technician needs to be assigned to change the switches (financial knockout criterion). You take a 2mm Allen screwdriver and tighten the grub screws, which can be reached via the front panel underside via small holes, after (after 30 years). Sometimes the world is quite simple ;-). The amplifier also does not need to be made usable(or even converted) for the use of the "main input"; the CD-Direkt switch available at the factory bypasses the entire Klagregel network, only the volume control remains active! Otherwise, very little contact spray (V61) will help for the switches and tone controls / balance for the next few years.
This amplifier is also an all-round great device(a real) analog amplifier without any A/D converters and servo drives (remote control).
