The float electrostat was produced one after the other in three externally different variants: the "original" variant PS0, which can also be seen in the New York MoMA, the variant PS1 and most recently the variant PS2. In total, countless detail changes have been made in the course of production. To this day, unique wearing comfort - although it is very controversial whether this is to be understood positively or negatively. The "head speaker" rests loosely on the "average head" and requires a calm posture to avoid falling down. With "above-average head shapes or sizes" the ears are pinched; an adaptation to different head sizes or shapes is not given because of the rigid design. This may be one reason for the controversial and sometimes quite subjective opinions. At the time, the Float Electrostat was considered by many to be the best headphones in the world - but here, too, opinions were quite polarized. A main competitor were the models from Stax , which, depending on where the listener placed his priorities, were classified as superior or inferior in terms of sound.

To operate the headphones a special Food is required. The supply device is connected both to the loudspeaker output of the amplifier and to the mains voltage in order to generate the bias voltage for the electrostats from it by means of a diode cascade circuit. The sound signal is modulated in the power supply to the high voltage necessary for the operation of the headphones. The power supply unit is equipped with a switched loudspeaker output which makes it possible to switch the input signal through to connected loudspeakers. In this switching state, the headphones are then deactivated.
