the audience have an unusual tuning of the bass reflex situation for such a small speaker, called "extended bass shelf" (EBS). The resonance volume of the box is calculated in such a way that a lower frequency range can be provided as a vm bass driver at the expense of the maximum bass volume.
Ideally, with the right distance to the back wall, an almost incredible, but not thickened bass presentation results. On the other hand, if you put the 42 too close to the wall or even on a shelf, it can also result in too much bass - and: this audience needs a stable amplifier.

"At the NAD , the small audience fully lives up to their good grades in precision and airiness, but neutrality suffers. Bass is not their strong point by design anyway. ..."
stereoplay Issue 6/2002; 7 products in the review: "very good" (34 out of 62 points); Sound: "Upper middle class"
"No-frills compact box with elaborate vibration systems. Tonally unspectacular, yet extremely balanced and with a fine sense of connections. The ideal understatement box."
