The tangential tone arm leads the pickup radially to the center of the plate. This is in contrast to the rotary tonearm, which moves the pickup rotating over the record in an arc of a circle.
The tangential tone arm scans the groove under the same conditions as the cutting bit cut it when recording. It thus does not form a tangential error angle and prevents the force component called skating.
With the Aiwa system, the tangential tone arm is electrically routed over the record via a threaded spindle. It is mounted on a guide arranged horizontally behind the turntable.
The movement is controlled electronically by an "identification unit" arranged in the sound head, which consists of an infrared light-emitting diode and a phototransistor. It determines whether a record is on the turntable, recognizes the sections between the individual pieces of music and determines the respective point of placement of the needle on the record.
The tonearm is readjusted according to the groove pitch by a photoelectric system on the tonearm bearing, which readjusts the tonearm even with a lateral tonearm deflection of only 1/4°. * The angle of 90 ° formed by the tonearm and the plate radius is practically maintained, so that the tangential error angle remains insignificantly small.
